How can I renew a certification?
Certification Renewal Requirements can be reviewed in the Candidate Handbook at https://docs.linuxfoundation.org/tc-docs/certification/lf-handbook2/certificates-and-certification.
In general, candidates may keep a certification current by retaking and passing the same exam, prior to the expiration of their certification. The certification will become current for 2 years starting on the date the exam is retaken and passed.
The CARE (Certification Advancement & Recertification Experience) Program announced in 2026 also offers additional renewal methods for specific certifications.
What is the CARE Program?
The CARE (Certification Advancement & Recertification Experience) Program is a credential maintenance framework established by the Linux Foundation and the Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF). It simplifies certification upkeep by automatically renewing eligible foundational certifications when a candidate achieves or recertifies a related higher-level certification. This approach rewards ongoing learning, eliminates redundant renewal testing, and ensures that professionals do not need to recertify the fundamentals once advanced capabilities have been verified.
How does the automatic certification renewal work?
KCNA Path: If you previously achieved a Kubernetes and Cloud Native Associate (KCNA) certification, earning or recertifying a Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) or Certified Kubernetes Application Developer (CKAD) certification will automatically extend your KCNA certification. The expiration date of your KCNA certification will be updated to align with the expiration date of the CKA or CKAD certification you just achieved.
KCSA Path: If you previously achieved a Kubernetes and Cloud Native Security Associate (KCSA) certification, earning or recertifying a Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS) certification will automatically extend your KCSA certification. The expiration date of your KCSA certification will be updated to align with the expiration date of the CKS certification you just achieved.
CKA Path: If you previously achieved a Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) certification, earning or recertifying the Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist (CKS) certification on or after June 18, 2026, will automatically extend your CKA certification. The expiration date of your CKA certification will be updated to align with your new CKS expiration date.
What is the CKS Full effect?
Starting June 18, 2026 earning or recertifying the CKS certification automatically extends your KCSA and CKA certifications. This resulting automatic renewal of the CKA certification then triggers the extension of your KCNA certification as well. Consequently, up to three credentials can be kept current through a single advanced certification.
Can CARE be used to reinstate expired certifications?
Yes. The program applies to certifications regardless of whether their status is currently current (active) or is already non-current (expired). As long as you have successfully taken and passed the CKA/KCNA,/KCSA exam at some point in the past, achieving the qualifying advanced certification will fully reinstate your expired credential and update it to current, with aligned dates.
If I have never taken an Associate certification, can I receive it automatically by passing an advanced exam?
No. You must have achieved and passed the lower-level certification (KCNA, KCSA, or CKA) at some point in your history to participate in the CARE program. Earning a higher-level certification will not automatically grant a lower-level credential that you have never previously held.
How does this program assist in maintaining Kubestronaut status?
Maintaining active Kubestronaut status requires holding five active Kubernetes credentials at the same time. Managing independent renewal timelines for each individual credential can cause considerable scheduling friction. By allowing advanced milestones like CKS to automatically bring your CKA, KCSA, and KCNA credentials back into good standing, the CARE program removes multiple individual renewal cycles, saving you both time and money while keeping your active Kubestronaut status secure.
I passed CARE-eligible exams on different accounts. Will my certifications be extended??
Yes, but the extension will not be applied automatically. Please open a ticket with Support and provide information on all the accounts that you used to pass CARE-eligible exams.
Dates & Retroactive Policies
When does the CARE Program take effect?
The effective date for KCNA and KCSA Paths is January 1, 2026.
The effective date for the CKA path is June 18, 2026.
Higher-level certifications achieved on or after the effective dates for each path will extend the expiration date of the foundational certifications for that path.
Can the CKA renewal from passing CKS be applied retroactively if I passed CKS before June 18, 2026?
No, your CKA certification will only be renewed or reinstated if you achieve or recertify your CKS certification on or after June 18, 2026. We are unable to make exceptions or retroactively apply the renewal for prior CKS exam passes.
How long does it take for my automatic renewals and Credly badges to appear?
Please allow a few business days for the automatic renewals of your lower-level certifications to be finalized across the systems. Once processed, your updated certification dates will automatically reflect in your Linux Foundation Training Portal profile and your verified Credly digital badges will be updated with the matching expiration dates.
